A Time of Expectant Hopes
In 2016, Pete Railand invited me to collaborate on a show he had scheduled for the Caerstecker Gallery in Ripon, Wisconsin. He was interested in making large scale flags and banners and as a printmaker needed someone with a textile background to work with. We looked to labor unions, suffragettes, masons and Sister Corita Kent for design inspiration. At a time in the world when it felt like everyone and everything was subject to attack, themes of perseverance, compassion and unity quickly took hold to create a body of work entitled A Time of Expectant Hopes.
Since it’s culmination, A Time of Expectant Hopes has been shown in full at the Caerstecker Gallery (Ripon, WI) and Scout Gallery (Milwaukee, WI) with individual pieces included in Forward 2018 A Survey of Wisconsin Art Now at the Charles Allis Museum (Milwaukee, WI) and 2020 Museum of Wisconsin Art Biennial at MOWA (West Bend, WI). Each piece represents countless hours of handwork between Pete and myself highlighting our areas of expertise in linocut printing, screen printing, hand quilting and hand embroidery.
